Selling on Walmart can be a lucrative endeavor for online merchants. With over 260 million shoppers visiting the site each month, it's no wonder that so many businesses are looking to list their products on the platform.

However, before you can sell on Walmart, you must first set up your seller central account and create your product listings - a process that can seem daunting to new sellers.

Let's explore the steps you must take to list an item, including how to select product categories, create quality development images, complete setup template, submit listing videos for approval from Walmart Seller Central - and more!

What Are The Steps to Create a Product Listing Variation on Walmart?

Walmart buyers are looking for products that will help them simplify their lives while also saving money.

As a seller on Walmart Marketplace, your job is to create high-quality listings with competitive pricing to drive sales. Here are the basic steps of setting up product listing variation on Walmart Marketplace.

What Are The Steps to Create a Product Listing Variation on Walmart?

Step 1: Set Up Your Account and Product Listings

Set Up Your Walmart Seller Central Account

Before you can list your product listings and create variations on the Walmart Marketplace, you must first set up a seller central account. This process includes verifying your business information and setting up payment options - including bank accounts linked to an active tax ID number.

You will also need to provide basic company information, such as physical addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, etc., in addition to creating an internal tax id for accounting purposes later, should you require it.

Once your registration is complete, all sellers have access to their seller dashboard, where they'll be able to manage orders/invoices/reports while uploading new items or making changes when necessary.

Create A Product Listing

What Are The Steps to Create a Product Listing Variation on Walmart?

You can create a product listing on Walmart by following the steps outlined below:

Select the Correct Categories and Subcategories

Make sure the item you listed is in the correct category - and that it's categorized correctly within that section.

For example, if you're selling an electric toothbrush, choose Electronics > Health & Personal Care > Oral Care as your primary category.

But what subcategory should you select?

Well, since this is an electric brush, we'll want to select "Electric Toothbrushes" as our primary sub-section.

You may also be required to include additional information about the type of item you're selling for specific categories/subsections – such as color or size – so make sure any relevant details are included.

When selecting categories and subcategories for your product, it's essential to keep the following in mind:

  • Walmart shoppers are looking for products that will help them save money and simplify their lives.
  • Listing an item in the wrong category or using incorrect subcategories can result in lost sales.
  • Walmart's categories and subcategories may vary slightly from those used on other marketplaces - such as Amazon - so be sure to do your research before listing items.

Complete the Item Set-up Template

The next step is completing the Walmart Item Setup Template. This template includes entering all the pertinent information about your product, such as title, description, UPC (s), weight, dimensions, etc. This information is used to create the listing's title and description and populate other fields on the form - such as item condition.

When filling out the Walmart Item Setup Template, be sure to:

  • Provide a clear, concise title for your product
  • Write an accurate and compelling product description.
  • Enter all UPCs associated with your product
  • List the weight and dimensions of your product accurately.
  • Indicate item condition (new, used, etc.)

Use Only High-Quality Product Images

Use high-quality images in your Walmart Product Listings

Product images are one of the most important aspects of any online listing. They help sellers stand out from their competition and persuade buyers to add items to their shopping cart. For your images to look their best, it's essential to follow these guidelines:

  • Use high-quality images that are in focus and properly lit.
  • Images should size at least 1000px on the longest side.
  • Photos should capture the product from multiple angles.
  • Avoid using stock photos or images that are heavily edited/retouched.

When taking pictures of your product, keep the following in mind:

  • The more appealing and accurate your photos look, the more likely buyers are to purchase an item.
  • Product images are one of the most critical factors used by shoppers when making a purchase decision.

Upload Your Product Images onto Walmart Seller Central

Upload Your Product Images onto Walmart Seller Central

Once you've taken quality product images, it's time to upload them to Seller Central. To do this, sign in to your seller account and click on the "Upload" tab. Here, you'll be able to select files from your computer and add them to your listing.

It's important to note that product images must meet Walmart's requirements to be uploaded. If they don't, you'll see an error message when attempting to add them. For more information on Walmart's image guidelines, visit Walmart Seller Central.

Set Your Price

The final step in creating a product listing is setting your price. You can complete this step by clicking on the "Pricing" tab under your seller dashboard's "Selling Details" section. From here, you'll be able to select the "Sell One Like This" option to list your product at a competitive price.

Once you've set your price, click on the "Save Changes" button, and your listing will go live! Now that you know how to add an item for sale on Walmart, what are you waiting for? Get started today by signing up for a free seller account.

Step 2: Create Product Listing Variations

Variant Groups to Segment Your Products into Feature Groups

Walmart allows sellers to create variant groups that segment products. Variants are simply different versions of the same effect - such as size, color, and material.

For example: If you're selling a t-shirt with several variants (i.e., sizes) like small, medium, large, your listing will consist of three separate listings rather than one lengthy page filled with information about each option available for purchase. These individual listings help buyers easily navigate through similar items by making them easier to compare against one another.

Variant Groups to Segment Items by Category

An everyday use case is creating variant groups for simple products like clothing or accessories to improve visibility on Walmart's marketplace and make the buying process easier for customers.

When creating variant groups, it's essential to:

  • Keep product variants as similar as possible
  • Use meaningful and accurate titles for each group
  • indicate which variants are available for purchase on your listing page

Consider Creating a Walmart Product Listing Video

Making a product listing video can be an effective way to increase conversion rates and stand out from the competition on Walmart.

When shopping online, buyers prefer to watch videos rather than read text descriptions. Research shows that including a video on your product listing can result in an 85% higher conversion rate than those without a video.

When creating your Walmart product listing video, keep the following in mind:

  • Videos should be between 30 and 60 seconds long
  • Videos should clearly explain what the product is and how it works
  • Videos should not include any sales or promotion messaging

Unfortunately, if you’re wondering how to add a video to Walmart, it might be a surprise to learn that Walmart doesn’t currently support most video content. However, you can still create a Walmart listing video to publish on other platforms and use them within your listings when they support the content.

Get started today by incorporating videos into your listings however you can. It's a great way to differentiate your products from the competition and stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Walmart Product Listing Variation Specifics

Walmart Product Listing Variation

Pat yourself on the back that you've made it this far! Setting up product listings is no easy task. But now that task is out of the way. You can make a product listing variation following these steps:

  • Go to your Walmart Seller account.
  • Click on Inventory → Manage Inventory, then select the item you want to list as a variation.
  • Under Attributes, select Product Details and Variations from the drop-down menus.

Once you've selected variations for an existing product listing, you'll be able to create different versions of that same item with their unique attributes (color, size, etc.).

You can also make new listings based on these variations if desired! That's it—you now know how to set up a product variation under My Products in your Walmart Seller Central dashboard!

However, there's still more to learn about listing variations. More specifically, you should know that you don't create a deviation from a parent SKU.

Instead, you associate child items to a family. Walmart ties these child items together using a Walmart Variant Group ID.

Let's discuss fields you must use while creating a variation listing with that in mind.

The Walmart Marketplace Variant Group ID Product Variation Field

There are two fields where you must input information. A Walmart Variant Group ID connects all the child variations with the primary listing.

You'll enter the same Walmart Variant Group ID, or parent SKU, to your child listings to connect products. You create the parent SKU using the combination you prefer, up to 20 characters!

However, you mustn't use the same parent SKU for different items! Otherwise, Walmart will add new items to existing variation listings, and you risk losing sales.

But that's not the only product variation information you should add. Let's discuss the second field that sellers must input during the variant creation process.

Step 3: Enter Walmart Marketplace Variation Attribution Details

The Variant Attribute Names

What are your product attributes? Walmart Marketplace sellers cannot forget to select features from the drop-down menu of their product listing template.

You must select the attributes you want to appear for each variation of your product listing. For instance, if you sell t-shirts in different colors and sizes, color and size would be considered attributes.

There are two attributes you would add to your products:

  • Clothing Size and Color

Walmart allows sellers to choose up to 100 unique attribute names! That means there are endless possibilities concerning your Walmart product variations.

Fortunately, you don't need to remember them all. Select the appropriate variation name from the drop-down menu, choose the proper attribute, and you're finished.

But, there's more to add before your product listing variation is ready for marketplace shoppers. Here's what to know about adding optional variation information.

Add a little to your product listings with optional variants.

These include:

  • walmart:is primary variant
  • walmart attr:Swatch Image-Swatch Variant Attribute (#1)
  • walmart attr:Swatch Image-Swatch Image URL (#1)

Variation - Is Primary Variant

The primary variant is the one that appears in search results and when the item page loads. If you want to designate a specific item as the primary variant, fill this box with Yes. If you don't wish to select a direct variation, Walmart will default to using the first SKU from the variety.

Variation - Swatch Image-Swatch Variant Attribute

If you want to add an image of the product in your variant, select this box and choose which attribute contains that swatch.

Variation - Swatch Image-Swatch Image URL

Next, upload the swatch image URL. 100x100 px is best.

Use SEO Best Practices

When creating your product listing, it's essential to use SEO best practices to ensure that shoppers find your products. There are a few key things you can do to optimize your Walmart listing for search engines:

  • Use correct keywords in your title and description. Make sure to include the main keyword for your product, as well as related keywords.
  • Include high-quality images that show off your product in the best light.
  • Write a detailed, informative description of your product. Include all of the features and benefits of your item.
  • Add relevant tags to help shoppers find your product.
